E-commerce payment gateways

A payment gateway is required to accept secure payments online for goods, services or donations. We have several options to choose from, and you only need to pick one to start accepting payments for website sales.

Most payment gateways will charge fees, either monthly, per transaction, or a percentage of the transaction amount. Please review the information below to view the benefits, features and pricing for each payment gateway.


Credit card gateway

The eWAY payment gateway lets shoppers pay via credit or debit card. Fees are reasonable, and the setup is more straightforward because you don't need a merchant account with your bank. Funds for online purchases will appear in your bank account the following business day.

Payment Express (DPS)

Credit card gateway

The Payment Express gateway is one of the most popular and trusted by thousands of businesses worldwide. Online shoppers can pay via credit or debit card and the funds will appear in your bank account the following business day.

Payment Express will require you to have a merchant account with your bank. If you're already processing credit cards in your physical shop, you may already have a merchant account set up and this will simplify the setup process. 

If you require a new merchant account, Payment Express can assist you with obtaining one. An application form will need to be completed, then a Payment Express account manager will be in touch to get the ball rolling.


Laybuy is a New Zealand payment gateway which offers a  "buy-now, pay-later" service. Unlike the traditional layby service, customers are able to buy and receive goods bought online through Laybuy and then pay for their purchase over 6 interest-free, weekly automated installments. E-commerce store owners are guaranteed to be paid by Laybuy within 48 hours, less their service fee of 4.75% which is fully inclusive of all Visa and MasterCard credit and debit fee’s. Laybuy also assumes credit and fraud risk for every transaction.


Credit card gateway

The Stripe is a payment gateway is known for its easy-to-use interface. A merchant account is not required and the "approval" system if fairly quick. 

There are no monthly fees with Stripe. Payment is in the form of percentage fee per-transaction, which is very reasonable. 

Stripe transfers funds fund received to your bank account on a payment schedule you specify (i.e.daily / weekly / monthly) and it takes a few days for funds to arrive in your bank account.


PayPal account transfer & credit card gateway

PayPal is a popular payment method, that is used by millions of websites and customers worldwide. A merchant account is not required and set up is fairly straightforward. 

To receive your funds received through Paypal, you will need to do a manual transfer into your bank account. Transfers take approximately 3-5 working days to process. Whilst this process is quick and easy, automated transfers are not currently available.

From the customers perspective PayPal lets them pay using funds from their personal PayPal account, or credit card. Unfortunealty our biggest complaint is that the user interface can be confusing to some customers that are not familiar with PayPal. This is evident in a higher rate of abandoned shopping carts compared to other payment gateways.

Larger shops often choose PayPal in addition to another credit card gateway, to allow customers extra choices of payment.

Bank Deposit / Direct Credit

Customers make manual payments through their own bank account

Bank Deposits, otherwise known as Direct Credits, give customers your bank account details so they can make payment through their own online banking. 

Even if you have credit card payment gateway enabled, it's often a good idea to have bank deposit payments available to give shoppers more choice with how they pay.

When a bank deposit order is placed, the customer is given a bank account number to make their payment to and a reference number to include when making payment. This is so you can identify the payment on the bank statement with the online purchase.

Their are no additional fees to enable a bank deposit / direct credit payment option. However you will need to allow for a little extra admin time to check that payment has been received and/or follow up payments, before shipping the order.
